Aloe Vera is a plant we’ve always grown at home, it’s actually very low maintenance and grows like a weed.
I remember my mother burned her face with steam off a pressure-cooker making soup for me as a sick child. I recall her instinctively coating her face in natural home-grown Aloe Vera gel and without a scar to show. Ever since it remains absolutely essential in my First Aid kit.
More recently, my husband and I actually woke one night due to the pain and heat of a bad sun burn and I dragged him to our balcony to get some Aloe Vera to coat our sore backs. The relief was instant.
It is a succulent and known for it’s thick fleshy leaves. It is quite simple to slice one off and expose the magical gel within which is what one uses on burns and wounds. This gel contains many beneficial compounds including vitamins (A, E, B12 & folic acid) minerals, amino acids and antioxidants.
Aloe Vera is known for it’s antibacterial, antiviral and antiseptic properties which is why it helps in wound healing and treating several skin problems. There are studies investigating the effects of Aloe Vera on aging and reviews suggest that it could help the skin retain moisture and improve skin integrity by improving skin elasticity and therefore possibly have a positive impact on the aging process.
I have read that Aloe Vera is effective in killing plaque producing bacterium in the mouth, as well as Candida Albicans.
I haven’t been consuming it myself, but I love Aloe Vera so much I can not deny I have been tempted to add it to my morning green smoothie. I’ve read however, that it has laxative properties and is good for reducing blood sugar, neither properties which would currently benefit me !
I don’t have a green thumb, but this plant is so low maintenance and great indoors too. It doesn’t require much water at all. It’s actually known to remove harmful pollutants, known as VOCs like benzene and formaldehyde; It sucks in carbon dioxide but provides abundant oxygen back into the air around it. It is actually recommended in your bedroom to improve air quality as it produces the oxygen at night.
This June, we decided to celebrate the Sun, the beautiful energy it emits which is so beneficial to life. Many of us have been deprived of it too in lockdown. To enjoy the sun responsibly, we decided to celebrate Aloe Vera!
